While golf was one of the first sports in America to allow women to participate, it has taken some time for it to be as highly-regarded as it is today. With the growing trends of fashionable athletic wear, the ability to embrace femininity and tough competitiveness together, as well as the incredibly success of female golfers across the world, it is now one of the biggest sports in the country.
Big Names and Role Models
The LPGA may have had humble beginnings, but professional female golfers of today are gaining a fair share of the spotlight throughout this season. Though Tiger Woods’ proclivity for golf brought a great deal of attention to the game several years ago, many professional female golfers such as Lorena Ochoa, Annika Sorenstam, and Cristie Kerr have brought a great deal of positive attention to the sport as well.
In the past two months, Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer have each taken a win for America, which has only increased the popularity of the sport on this side of the Atlantic. Right now, the LPGA is scrambling for an idol since Annika Sorenstam left the spotlight and Lorena Ochoa retired while in her prime earlier this year. Paula Creamer, a young and charismatic player who recently took first in the U.S. Open, and has been a prime candidate for women’s golf.
Fashion Versatility
The restrictions of golf fashion for most of the 20th century may have contributed to the sport’s slow-to-grow reputation. Now that women on the golf course have a number of comfortable and fashionable options, a day on the green is much more appealing. While talent and success are most commendable, a fair amount of sex appeal has certainly not hurt the game’s popularity.
Female and Family Friendly
One major contributing factor to the rise in popularity of female golf is, undoubtedly, a renewed sense of female strength. Women all over the world are taking matters into their own hands, from business to pleasure, and women’s sports are following suit. Since golf began as a social activity, it has a reputation of decency, honor, and respect. Men and women can play together, without changing anything other than a player’s handicap. The outfits are respectable, the players use proper decorum, and the fans can have a picnic while watching the most famous players, all for less than the cost of a ticket to most other major sporting events (such as the Super Bowl). Five generations can enjoy playing or watching a game of golf together.
The Big Break
This season of The Big Break is a prime example of how popular women’s golf has become over the past decade. The premise behind the Golf Channel’s show is to choose talented golfers who are either taking a second attempt at a professional golf career, or are somewhat stagnant and unnoticed in their current career. These golfers are given a second chance, and why not throw a camera on them as well?
The first season of The Big Break premiered in 2003, with amateur male golfers, as well as professionals on mini-tours; they were given the opportunity to show their competitive side for national television, while competing for exemptions into top professional golf tournaments.
This season, the reality show picked eleven beautiful and talented female golfers to compete for possible tour exemptions. They all reside in a house together for the duration of the season, and compete against their friends and roommates, as is common with reality TV shows. This season’s show is set at the Sandals Resort in the Bahamas, and is the second season is the series for ladies only. Not only do these young and talented women get to spend about two months in the Bahamas, but they are given the opportunity to fulfill their golf dreams.
Additionally, this show is great for Tracey Lynn Golf, since some of the players are sporting our trends. The contestant Carling Coffing is shown in more than one episode wearing pieces of our best selling line, Twist’d Sister.
Fundraising
There are many great things about golf, and a possible reason for its increased popularity is its fundraising potential. Many people forget that the biggest winner in a round of golf is normally a charity. Most tournaments, for men and for women, are huge fundraisers for organizations and charities all over the world. Contributing to the popularity of golf is contributing to a great fundraising channel for many underprivileged citizens of the world.
