Current Top 5 Contenders for 2010 LPGA Title

Jiyai Shin: The 22-year-old South Korean sensation regained her position as the leader on the LPGA tour. Her dramatic victory at the 2010 Evian Masters where she won by scoring a birdie on the par 5 18th hole put her back on top of the Rolex World Golf Rankings. Her recent drop in the rankings was the result of a medical surgery briefly slowing her down but now she is back and ready to take the 2010 LPGA title. Jiyai Shin ranks number six in scoring average (70.41) and number two in Top-10 finishes with 8 out of 11 starts. Aside from her one win this season, Shin has also tied for third at the HSBC Women’s Champions, LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmens, and U.S. Women’s Open.

Jiyai Shin turned pro in 2006 and quickly rose to the top of the KLPGA. She has broken all existing KLPGA records, including the KLPGA career money record in only 33 events (compared to 99 events of the previous record holder), 20 of which she won. Since she started her career in 2006 she has amassed 32 professional wins. In 2008, Shin was the first non-LPGA member to win three events including the Women’s British Open and the ADT Championship. She is a young and extremely consistent player looking to keep her status as highest rated golfer on the LPGA tour.

Cristie Kerr:  The first American to ever reach number one on the Rolex Rankings is looking to win her first LPGA Tour. She is currently tied for third in the scoring average with a 70.04 and her GIR putting average of 1.74 is tied for 1st. So far this season she has two victories and six top ten finishes out of 12 starts. She made history when she won the LPGA Championship Presented by Wegmens 12 strokes ahead of the competition. She also won the LPGA State Farm Classic, tied for fourth at the season-opening Honda PTT LPGA Thailand, and earned runner-up honors at the HSBC Women’s Champions. This hot start to the 2010 LPGA Tour has put her in contention for the top spot on the Rolex Rankings. She was rated number one for three weeks after her astonishing LPGA Championship performance and is currently number two looking to get back on top.

Christie currently has 14 career LPGA victories and two major championships. She is one of the most experienced golfers on the green and has been playing professionally for 14 years. She was an amateur prodigy who turned pro at the age of 18. Now at the age of 32, she is one of the older athletes in this year’s LPGA Tour but she is looking to finally prove that she is the best in the world, which is a goal she has worked towards since she was 8 years old.

Ai Miyazato: Another young golfer looking to take over the Rolex Rankings and LPGA Tour, Ai Miyazato has already won four LPGA events this season. She has made 13 starts and six of those were top 10 finishes. After owning the number one position in the Rolex Rankings for a week she is now bouncing around in the top three. The 5’2” Japanese golfer is only 25 years old and is at the height of her game. She was the first person since 1966 to win consecutive season-opening events with the Honda PTT LPGA Thailand and HSBC Women’s Champions. She is currently ranked 7th for scoring average at 70.67 and 17th for her putting average of 29.07. So far, she is 5th in 2010 money earnings with $1,086,816.

Miyazato turned pro in 2003 and won 11 JLPGA events over the next two seasons. After a shocking success at the LPGA qualifiers in 2005, she recorded 16 top-10 finishes over the next three seasons but did not actually win until last year’s Evian Masters Presented by Societe Generale. That taste of victory rocketed her into the 2010 season with two back-to-back wins and four total, putting her in contention to be the best golfer on the LPGA Tour.

Suzann Pettersen: The Norway-born golfer with an animated, highly emotional demeanor on the golf course is having one of the best years of her career. She has nine top-10 finishes in 12 events this season (ranked 3rd), is ranked 1st in greens hit with 412 of 540, and ranked 2nd in overall scoring average with 70.05. Suzann is probably one of the most consistent performers on the tour but has yet to win an event in 2010. She has racked up four 2nd place finishes and is bound to finish first soon. Currently ranked 4th in the Rolex Rankings but is extremely close in the mix to be the best in LPGA.

Yani Tseng: After winning her second career major at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, Yani Tseng moved up the rankings to compete for the top position in the LPGA Tour. She is only 21 years old from Taiwan and is the youngest player in LPGA history to win three career major championships. She also made history by being the first person from Taiwan to win an LPGA major championship and was the fastest golfer in LPGA history to reach the $2 million mark in career earnings. This 21-year-old is on fire and isn’t stopping anytime soon. So far this season, she has 12 starts, 6 top-10 finishes, and 2 major championships. She won the Kraft Nabisco Championship by one shot over Suzann Pettersen and is currently ranked 5th on the Rolex Rankings. She can very easily reach the top with another victory since the race for first is so close. The confident pro is currently ranked 3rd in 2010 money earned, 2nd in rounds under par with 29 out of 42, and 5th in scoring average with 70.36.
